PUBLIC TRANSPORT SERVICE

The Brescia metro is an automatic light rail system that crosses the city from north to southeast, passing through the historic center and connecting the main urban areas.
Created in 2013 and inspired by the major northern European metro systems, it is now a fundamental part of the city's transport network, offering a fast and efficient solution for daily travel.
The Brescia metro is one of the most advanced automated systems in Italy: a high-quality service that combines technology, innovation, and beauty at the service of the city.
The entire operation is managed automatically and in complete safety thanks to a control system spread along the line, in stations, on trains, and in the PCO – Central Operations Center in Sant'Eufemia/Buffalora.
The PCO is the operational heart of the metro: from here, all line processes are monitored and managed in real time, thanks to dedicated control rooms and specialized personnel. Full automation allows for continuous monitoring of the system's efficiency and safety, making the service extremely flexible.
The number of trains, speed, frequency, and stopping times can be adjusted according to demand, even in the event of sudden changes. Thanks to these features, the Brescia metro offers a very high level of service: during peak hours with intervals of up to 90 seconds, and in the evenings and on holidays with short waiting times of between 4 and 10 minutes.
The Brescia metro trains are fully automatic, driverless, and bidirectional: a technological choice that guarantees high performance and maximum reliability in all operating conditions.
The trains, consisting of three articulated cars with wide doors and functional interior spaces, can accommodate over 300 passengers. They offer seating, areas dedicated to people with disabilities, and high transport capacity, with speeds of up to 80 km/h and advanced safety standards.
Safety is guaranteed by continuous video surveillance and real-time monitoring.
The focus on accessibility and the design by Giugiaro Design, inspired by the Copenhagen metro, complete a modern, elegant, and fully European service.
An EPB (Earth Pressure Balance) shielded TBM was used for the Brescia subway excavations. This technologically advanced machine has some unique features, including the ability to support itself in excavation sites such as Brescia, which has alluvial and sandy soil.
The TBM used in Brescia was approximately 130 meters long, weighed 1,300 tons, and consisted of a cylindrical shield 9 meters in diameter and 9 meters long, followed by a series of service cars known as backup. The front part of the shield consisted of a 9-meter-diameter cutter, whose rotation was ensured by 14 hydraulic motors developing a power of 2,000 kW, while the power supply in the tunnel was a medium voltage of 15,000 volts.
The tunnel boring machine, owned by Astaldi, was manufactured by the renowned German company Herrenknecht in Schwanau.
Its underground journey, which began in 2005 and ended in 2009, also passed through the historic center, successfully tackling complex contexts and archaeological finds.
The Brescia metro stations are the result of a unified project that integrates functionality, architecture, and quality of space. This project was a joint effort between Brescia Mobilità, Cremonesi Workshop, and Astaldi S.p.a. as the civil engineering contractor.
The stations are divided into deep and underground stations: the former, with platforms up to 22 meters below street level, are the most complex type; the latter are located at a depth of approximately 7 meters.
The shape and materials are common to all stations in order to reinforce the identity of the line. Natural stone, porcelain stoneware, metal, and glass guarantee resistance, durability, and comfort. Diorite, used on the main accessible surfaces, characterizes the user's journey from street level to the underground spaces.
The balance between surfaces, colors, and materials defines recognizable and orderly environments, where the architecture guides the travel experience in a clear, safe, and contemporary way.
